Is AI chat safe?
Structurally safer than chatting with real strangers, because there is no other human involved — no unverifiable identity, no financial demands, no pressure to meet offline. What replaces those is a different risk class: how your data is handled. AI chat is not risk-free, the risks are simply of a different kind.
That reframing is the useful part. People arrive at this question carrying worries shaped by random chat apps, and most of those specific worries genuinely do not apply. But swapping one risk class for another is not the same as eliminating risk, and anyone telling you otherwise is selling something.
How do the risks differ from random stranger chat?
With strangers, the danger comes from the person on the other end — identity fraud, romance and investment scams, coerced intimate images, offline meetings, minors exposed to adults. With AI chat none of those have a mechanism, because there is no counterparty. The exposure moves entirely to data handling.
| Risk | Random stranger chat | AI companion chat |
|---|---|---|
| Unverifiable identity | Present — anyone can claim anything | No counterparty exists |
| Financial and romance scams | A well-documented pattern | No mechanism |
| Coerced intimate images | A known and serious risk | No mechanism |
| Offline meeting risk | Present by design | No such feature |
| Minors exposed to adults | Hard to prevent | No other users |
| Data handling | Varies | The main thing to check |
| Inaccurate or biased output | Human error | Present — AI states wrong things confidently |
So the questions worth asking change completely. Instead of "can I trust this person", it becomes "is this used for training, how precise is the location, can I actually delete it".
What should I check in an AI chat app's privacy policy?
Five things: whether conversations train the model, how precise location data is, where images are stored, how long anything is retained, and who it is shared with. All five are in the privacy policy, and vague wording on any of them should be read pessimistically.
- Training use. Search the policy for "training". You want an explicit negative statement.
- Location precision. City-level context and exact GPS coordinates are very different things.
- Image storage. Where photos live, and whether they are processed by third-party vision models.
- Retention. How long data is kept, and when backups are purged after deletion.
- Third parties. Which processors receive what, and whether any of it leaves your country.
How does Beff handle your data?
Conversations and images are never used to train AI models. Location is optional and used only at city or district level, never as stored GPS coordinates. Deleting your account removes everything immediately, with backups purged within 30 days. Analytics are opt-in and stripped of personally identifying data.
Point by point against the five checks above:
- Training: enterprise AI models with a no-training guarantee on customer data.
- Location: only with permission, only city or district granularity. Decline it and conversation still works.
- Images: secure cloud storage; may be sent to a vision model to generate a reply, still never for training.
- Retention: kept while your account exists, deleted instantly on account deletion, backups purged within 30 days.
- Analytics: opt-in, and message bodies, emails and phone numbers are stripped before transmission.
The binding document is the privacy policy.
How do I delete everything?
App Settings, then Delete Account. One tap removes every persona, conversation, memory and image immediately. It cannot be undone, and backups are permanently purged within 30 days. If you cannot open the app, email contact@beff.life.
If you email, include the address or social provider you signed up with, your in-app nickname, your birth year and the name of one persona, so we can verify it is you. We complete the check and reply within seven business days. Full detail is in account deletion.
Is this suitable for teenagers?
Beff is rated 14 and over and is not an adult companion app. Because much of this category is adult-oriented, guardians should check the store age rating and content policy of any app in this space rather than assuming.
Two things worth a guardian's attention with any AI companion, not just this one: that the persona is AI and not a person, and that AI output can be wrong. Both are worth saying out loud rather than assuming a teenager has inferred them.
How is payment protected?
All subscriptions and one-time purchases run through App Store and Google Play in-app billing. Card details never reach Beff servers. Cancel any time in App Settings; access continues to the end of the period you paid for.
Because this is digital content that activates immediately, refunds after purchase may be limited. Where the reason is clear — system error, duplicate charge, unauthorised purchase by a minor — contact us with the receipt. See refund policy and terms of service.
What rights do you have under the law?
Beff is operated from South Korea, so Korean data protection law applies — principally the Personal Information Protection Act, which grants rights to access, correct, delete and restrict processing of your data. Readers elsewhere may hold comparable GDPR or CCPA-style rights. This is general information, not legal advice.
At a high level, the regimes that shape how a service like this must behave:
- Personal Information Protection Act (개인정보 보호법). Consent for collection and use, and rights to access, correct, delete and halt processing.
- Location Information Act (위치정보법). Separate consent for location data, with the right to withdraw it.
- E-Commerce Act (전자상거래법). Disclosure of business identity and rules on withdrawal of purchase, with limits for digital content already consumed.
- Network Act (정보통신망법). Obligations around service operation and notification of security incidents.
The documents that actually bind us are the privacy policy and terms of service. If anything on this page conflicts with them, those documents govern.
A safety checklist you can actually use
Do not share identifiers you would not post publicly, keep location permission off unless you want the context, read the training-use line before you get invested, and check the age rating before installing anything in this category.
- Avoid entering identifiers — full address, ID numbers, card details, workplace specifics — into any chat, AI or otherwise.
- Grant location only if you want context-aware conversation; it is not required.
- Read the training-use sentence early, not after months of conversation.
- Check where the deletion button is before you need it.
- Treat medical, legal and financial statements from any AI as unverified.
- If an AI companion is displacing human contact rather than filling gaps around it, that is worth noticing.
Key points
- AI chat removes counterparty risk entirely; it does not remove risk.
- The remaining exposure is data handling — training use, location precision, retention, sharing.
- Beff: no model training, optional city-level location, instant deletion, backups purged in 30 days.
- Payment runs through App Store and Google Play; card details never touch our servers.
- Korean data protection law grants access, correction and deletion rights; this page is not legal advice.

Frequently asked questions
Is AI chat safer than random stranger chat?
In one specific way, yes: there is no other human, so identity fraud, financial scams, coerced images and offline meeting risks have no mechanism. But it introduces a different risk class around data handling, so it is a change in the shape of the risk rather than its removal.
Can my conversations leak?
Any service holding data carries some risk, which is why the things to check are retention, third-party sharing and deletion. Beff never uses conversations or images for model training, strips personally identifying data from analytics, and deletes everything immediately when you delete your account.
Do I have to turn on location?
No. Location permission is optional. Declining it only removes location-aware conversation context and the map view. When granted, only city or district level location is used and precise GPS coordinates are not stored on our servers.
Is Beff suitable for teenagers?
Beff is rated 14 and over and is not an adult companion app. Because a large share of this category is adult-oriented, guardians should check the store age rating and content policy of any AI companion app rather than assuming.
If I delete my account, is the data really gone?
Yes. Deleting your account removes all personas, conversations, memories and images immediately, and backups are permanently purged within 30 days. Some records may be retained longer only where the law requires it, and we tell you when that applies.
How do refunds work?
Payment runs through App Store and Google Play in-app billing, so card details never reach Beff servers. Because digital content activates immediately, refunds after purchase may be limited, but clear cases such as system errors, duplicate charges or unauthorised purchases by a minor are reviewed on request.
What if the AI says something harmful or wrong?
AI can produce inaccurate or biased output. Report the response in the app or email contact@beff.life with the surrounding conversation. Do not rely on any AI for medical, legal, financial or psychological guidance.
Can an AI companion replace therapy?
No. Beff is not a substitute for counselling or treatment and should not be used as one. If low mood, anxiety or thoughts of self-harm persist, please contact a qualified professional service.
